Fact Check: Statement Related to Farmers’ Protest Falsely Attributed to US Prez Joe Biden

Date:

A picture post is doing the rounds on social media suggesting that the newly elected president of the United States of America, Joe Biden, has spoken in support of the agitating farmers protesting to repel the three farm bills.

The text on the picture in Hindi read: “दिल्ली बॉर्डर पर किसान ठंड और बारिश में पचास दिन से बैठे हुए हैं उनका शांति पूर्ण समाधान हो और जल्द से जल्द मोदी सरकार किसान की मांग पूरी करे और उन्हे अपने घर संम्मानपूर्वक वापस भेज दे. – जो बायडेन अमेरिका राष्ट्रपती.”

(Translation: Farmers have been sitting at the Delhi border for fifty days in the cold and rain. Their matter should be fully resolved and the Modi government should fulfill the demand of the farmers as soon as possible and send them back to their homes respectfully. – Joe Biden US President)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found it to be FAKE.

Firstly, we noticed the DD logo on the picture. On putting the keyframes of the video through Reverse Image Search along with relevant keywords, we found the original video from which the screenshot has been extracted.

The photo is taken from a DD News bulletin published on 31 October 2020. The title of the video read, ‘अमेरिकी राष्ट्रपति चुनाव: डोनाल्ड ट्रंप-जो बाइडेन के बीच ज़ुबानी जंग तेज़’. (Translation- US Presidential Election: The war of words between Donald Trump-Joe Biden intensifies.)

The footage of President Biden is from his final campaign rally in Wisconsin which was held before farmers started their protest at the capital’s borders.

Further, we put the above statement through a Google search along with keywords such as ‘Joe Biden,’ ‘दिल्ली बॉर्डर’, ‘किसान’, etc, and did not find any authentic report to prove that Biden made the above statement.

When Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke about the ongoing protests in the country, it got global media attention. It is hard to believe that the Indian and global media would not cover such a statement from the president of the USA.

When a country’s leader makes a statement it is there on their official website and social media handles. Since the statement mentions 50 days of protest, we found that the protest completed 50 days on January 14, 2021. We scanned through Joe Biden’s official Twitter handle to look for all the tweets published on January 14, 2021, but did not find anything remotely close to the statement in question.

In conclusion, upon analysing all our discoveries, it is safe to say that the statement in question is being falsely attributed to US President Joe Biden.
