On the first day of the coronavirus vaccination drive on Saturday, the health ministry said that 1,91,181 people were vaccinated. No case of post-vaccination hospitalisation has been reported so far, the Ministry added.

Billed as the world’s largest vaccination program, covering the entire length and breadth of the country, the drive aims to first inoculate millions of its healthcare and frontline workers and reach an estimated 3 crore people by the end of its first phase.

A total of 3006 session sites across all states and union territories was virtually connected during the launch.

Speaking at the launch of the drive, PM Modi highlighted that the Indian vaccines are cheaper in comparison to the foreign ones.

“Our scientists and experts were assured about the safety and efficacy of the two Made in India vaccines, only then did they allow the emergency use authorization. That is why citizens don’t need to fall prey to any propaganda, rumours, or misinformation,” he said.

Union Health Minister Harshvardhan was at AIIMS during the launch of the vaccination drive. “I am very happy and satisfied today. We have been fighting against COVID-19 in PM’s leadership for the last year. This vaccine will work as a ‘sanjeevani’ in the fight against COVID-19, which has entered the final stage.”

Meanwhile, India recorded 15,144 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, according to Union Health Ministry data on Sunday. With this, the nationwide tally has reached 10,557,985.

The number of active cases stands at 2,08,826 while 10,196,885 patients have been cured/discharged from hospitals. The country recorded 181 fresh fatalities, which took the death toll to 1,52,274.

On the global front, Brazil marked the fifth consecutive day with more than 1,000 fatalities, as it recorded 61,567 new coronavirus cases on Saturday and 1,050 further deaths.

More than 94.47 million people have been infected with novel coronavirus across the world, while 2.02 million have died from the disease, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
