As the first day of coronavirus vaccination drive came to an end, the health ministry said that 1,91,181 people were vaccinated today. No case of post-vaccination hospitalisation has been reported so far, the Ministry added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched India’s vaccination drive against the novel coronavirus via video conferencing today morning.

Billed as the world’s largest vaccination program, covering the entire length and breadth of the country, the drive aims to first inoculate millions of its healthcare and frontline workers and reach an estimated 3 crore people by the end of its first phase.

A total of 3006 session sites across all states and union territories will be virtually connected during the launch. Around 100 beneficiaries will be vaccinated at each session site on the inaugural day.

Speaking at the launch of the drive, PM Modi highlighted that the Indian vaccines are cheaper in comparison to the foreign ones.

“Our scientists and experts were assured about the safety and efficacy of the two Made in India vaccines, only then did they allow the emergency use authorization. That is why citizens don’t need to fall prey to any propaganda, rumours, or misinformation,” he said.

Union Health Minister Harshvardhan was at AIIMS during the launch of the vaccination drive. “I am very happy and satisfied today. We have been fighting against COVID-19 in PM’s leadership for the last year. This vaccine will work as a ‘sanjeevani’ in the fight against COVID-19, which has entered the final stage.”

West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar while attending the foundation day of the Asiatic Society in Kolkata on said that the country has done excellent work in the field of vaccine research.

“The largest democracy with 1.3 billion people faced a great challenge on account of COVID pandemic. If you examine on the global horizon, the track record has been excellent even in the field of research and getting this vaccine. India is contributing by research to the welfare of its people. The vaccine has arrived and things will get on track,” Dhankhar said.

India reported 15,158 new COVID-19 cases and 175 deaths in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said on Saturday.
The overall coronavirus tally in the country has reached 1,05,42,841, including 2,11,033 active cases. With 16,977 discharges in the last 24 hours, the cumulative recoveries reached 1,01,79715. The death toll has gone up to 1,52,093.
