What needs to be done for women’s security in Uttar Pradesh?
”UP Police don’t act on time that’s why many women don’t even go and complain. They think they will not be taken seriously. This acts as a deterrent. So, firstly, we need to sensitize police officials properly…if they act on a complaint properly, I think cases will decrease”, Rekha Sharma said.
”In recent future, I’m going to meet DG Uttar Pradesh and discuss this. The number of cases where police apathy is there…I would like to talk to the DG.”
Budaun gangrape case
A 50-year-old woman was gangraped and killed allegedly by three men, including a priest, on Sunday night in the Ughaiti area of Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun district, according to the police.
Two men have been arrested and a case has been registered against them, police added. The woman worked as an Anganwadi worker and had gone to the temple to offer prayers on the evening of January 3 but never returned. The post-mortem report of the deceased confirmed rape, injury in her private parts, and fracture in her legs.
Meanwhile, the Station Officer of Ughaiti police station has been suspended for dereliction of duty as he allegedly did not act immediately after receiving information of the alleged rape and murder of the woman.
Badaun district magistrate Prashant Kumar said the National Security Act (NSA) will be invoked against the accused.
Prashant Kumar, District Magistrate, Badaun, said that two people have been arrested in the matter and a team has been constituted to look into the arrest of the other accused person, adding, ”We believe that this incident is fit to be presented to the NSA for a probe and we will do that.”
