India continues to disappoint, lost 6 straight international matches for the first time in 17 years. Home team Australia defeated visitors by 66 runs at the SCG to take a lead in the 3-game series.
After winning the toss, the Australian team decided to bat first. Openers David Warner and Aaron Finch exposed India’s bowling line-up. Aaron Finch scored a brilliant 114 off 124 with two towering sixes. Steve Smith also accompanied him with impeccable 105 off 66. His innings included 4 sixes and 11 fours. For India, Mohammed Shami was the most successful bowler with 3 wickets. Aussie gave a target of 375 runs after 50 overs.
In reply, the blue brigade started off well. Both Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan looked confident in the first few overs. First 50 runs came in just 5 overs. But, it didn’t take a long time for a team having depth in batting to collapse. Except for Dhawan and Pandya, no other player looked in form. At the end of 50 overs, the Indian side managed to score only 308 runs.
The second ODI of the three-match series will be played on Nov 29 at the SCG
India’s problems don’t seem to abate. After the exclusion of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, pacer Ishant Sharma has also been ruled out of the Test Series owing to his side strain injury. Rohit Sharma, who is recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during the Indian Premier League (IPL), will be next assessed on December 11.
“Ishant has recovered completely from his side strain injury sustained during IPL 2020 in the U.A.E. While he’s building up his workload in order to achieve Test match fitness, Mr. Ishant Sharma has been ruled out of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Mr. Rohit Sharma had to come back to Mumbai after the IPL to meet his ailing father. His father is now recuperating well and that has allowed him to travel to the NCA and start his rehabilitation, ” BCCI said in its statement.
Rohit Sharma’s presence in the Test squad will give balance to the side as skipper Kohli will be available only for the red ball game. He will return home from Adelaide to be with his pregnant wife Anushkha Sharma in Mumbai.
