Fact Check: No, UP CM Yogi Adityanath did NOT burn crackers this Diwali; Here’s the truth

A video of a girl banging her head on a police van and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath burning crackers is doing round on social media. It is being shared with a claim that the girl in the video is banging her head because her father was arrested by UP Police for selling crackers and on the other hand Yogi Adiyanath was burning crackers this Diwali. 

The Facebook caption read, “This is Yogi Land.

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found it to be false and misleading.

With the help of keywords, we found the same video of Yogi Adityanath on Facebook posted by The Lucknow Express dated August 4, 2020, claiming that he lit firecrackers at his official residence in Lucknow as part of ‘Deepotsav’, a day before foundation stone laying ceremony of Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

The same video was posted by ANI UP dated August 4, 2020.

Moreover, we found the longer version of the same event on YouTube by ANI on dated August 4, 2020.

The YouTube video description read, “Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), Aug 04 (ANI): Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath lit up earthen lamps at his official residence as part of ‘deepotsav’ ahead of the foundation stone laying ceremony of Ram Temple in Ayodhya on August 4. CM Adityanath also burned a firecracker at his residence. ‘Bhoomi pujan’ for Ram Temple is scheduled to be held on August 05. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for Ram Temple.

Further, we then investigated the video of the girl and found that this incident took place on this Diwali. According to Doordarshan, UP police arrested the man selling crackers and his daughter desperately begged the police to release her father. The video of the incident went viral on social media in which UP Police was criticized for mishandling the kid.

According to NDTV, after the video of a girl surfaced on social media showing her head banging against a police van, Yogi Adityanath ordered release of her father. 

According to another report by Times Now, UP police later celebrated Diwali with the family of the young girl whose distressing video went viral after her father’s arrest.

Hence, based on the above fact check, we can say that the social media post in question is false and misleading.
