NCW Chief meets Maha Guv to discuss “rise in love jihad cases;” #SackRekhaSharma trends

After NCW announced their chief, Rekha Sharma held a meeting with Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to discuss the “rise in love jihad cases” among other issues, #SackRekhaSharma started trending on social media.

Rekha Sharma told the governor that there was a rise in “love jihad” cases in Maharashtra and also highlighted the difference between consensual inter-faith marriages and “love jihad”, mentioning that the latter required attention, the NCW said, as per news agency PTI.

Tweeting a picture of the NCW chief sitting with the Maharashtra governor, NCW wrote, “Our Chairperson @sharmarekha met with Bhagat Singh Koshyari, His Excellency, Governor of Maharashtra and discussed issues related to #womensafety in the state including defunct One Stop Centres, molestation and rape of women patients at #COVID centres and rise in love jihad cases.”

Soon after, Twitter users started commenting on the post, demanding Rekha Sharma’s sacking. Many users also shared previous tweets of the NCW chief calling them ‘inappropriate.’

Later, referring to a tweet against PM Narendra Modi posted from her Twitter account, Rekha Sharma tweeted saying her account was hacked and added that she will complain about the same to Twitter India. However, she later deleted these tweets.

It is to be noted that the meeting comes in the backdrop of the recent controversy surrounding the Tanishq advertisement which showed a Hindu woman married to a Muslim man. Later, Tanishq had to withdraw the ad after it faced massive backlash for allegedly promoting “love jihad.”

“Love jihad” term is used by some groups to refer to relationships between Muslim men and Hindu women, alleging that it involves forcibly converting the women to Islam.
