Following weeks of political uncertainty, Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government in Rajasthan came out of choppy waters on Friday by winning the motion of confidence through voice vote.
Speaker CP Joshi has now adjourned the house till August 21. The Gehlot led Congress government has the support of at least 107 MLAs, while the BJP in opposition only has 72 votes.
Reacting on the developments, Sachin Pilot said, “The vote of confidence which was brought by the govt has been passed with a very good majority today in the Rajasthan Assembly. Despite various attempts by the opposition, the result is in favour of the government.”
Congress government had moved a confidence motion as the special session of the Rajasthan Assembly began. Law Minister Shanti Kumar Dhariwal incidentally tabled the proposal for the trust vote in the Assembly.
Commenting on his seating arrangement in the House, Pilot meanwhile quipped that the strongest warrior had been sent to the border. “”When I came to the house and found that my seat had been changed, I was wondering why. When I sat there (pointing to government benches), I was safe. Now I am next to the opposition. Then I realized I have been sent to the sarhad (border). That is because only the bravest and most powerful warrior is sent to the border,” Pilot remarked.
Earlier, in response to BJP MLA Rajendra Rathore comment, Pilot said, “We had a problem, we went to a doctor. Now all 125 of us are sitting together.”
The special session of Rajasthan Assembly got off to a fiery start today with Congress taking potshots at the BJP. While BJP MLAs created an uproar in the House, Congress MLA Dhariwal said, “No Shah or tanashah (dictator) could do anything in Rajasthan.”
The opposition BJP meanwhile said the Congress government has gone into a “state of coma” which has prompted the BJP to move the no-confidence motion.
Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Thursday had squarely blamed the Congress for the state of affairs in Rajasthan. “I want to tell Congress leaders and the Chief Minister that they should not put the burden of their failures on someone else’s shoulder. The situation in Congress is due to their differences and internal rift, BJP has nothing to do with, whenever the Congress government (in the state) falls, it will be because of their own doings,” he said.
Incidentally, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Thursday issued a whip for the second time to six of its MLAs in Rajasthan to vote against the Congress in any no-confidence motion or any other proceedings in the state Assembly.
BSP National General Secretary Satish Chandra Mishra issued the whip to the MLAs. “All six MLAs have been directed under para 2(1)(a) of the Xth Schedule to vote against the Congress Party in any No-Confidence motion or any other proceedings to be held during the Assembly session of Rajasthan Assembly and if they violate the same they will face disqualification under para 2(1)(b) of the Xth Schedule,” a press release issued by BPS stated.
Last month, Sachin Pilot was removed as Deputy Chief Minister and Rajasthan Congress chief after his differences with Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot came out in open triggering a political crisis in the state. Pilot was reportedly miffed after the SOG sent him a notice to record his statement in a case of alleged poaching of Congress MLAs in the state.
However, this apparently seems to have ended now as Pilot has agreed to work for the party after a meeting with the top Congress leadership.
