Dead body of West Bengal BJP MLA found hanging outside his shop; party cries foul, demands investigation

A big political controversy has broken out in West Bengal on Monday morning after the dead body of a BJP MLA Debendra Nath Roy  was found hanging in an open verandah outside his shop in a market. In the latest update, the investigation of the case has been handed over to the West Bengal CID ( Crime Investigation Department). The police said that a suicide note has also been found in his pocket.

BJP and the family of the deceased have demanded a CBI inquiry of the matter. The family has alleged the incident to be a planned murder. Expressing his grief, BJP’s Bengal Chief Dilip Ghosh said “The brutal assassination of the Hematabad MLA is unfortunate. We are demanding a CBI investigation, as the state government will never conduct an impartial investigation into these killings. There will be protests all over West Bengal.”

Police briefed that the note mentions two names as responsible for his death. Local enquiry reveals he had financial dealings with these two persons. Bengal Police is now matching his handwriting with the suicide note.

According to Raiganj Zila SP Sumit Kumar, the police reached the spot, after getting the information from local residents, and the body has been sent for post-mortem. Further investigation is underway.However, BJP West Bengal has claimed that he was “killed and then hung”.One family member confirmed that someone came and he went out at 1 am with that person.

This incident has fuelled BJP’s rage against state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s government, accusing her and her party of murder. Top leaders from BJP, including working party chief JP Nadda expressed his rage on the issue via tweet, saying “The suspected heinous killing of Debendra Nath Ray, BJP MLA from Hemtabad in West Bengal, is extremely shocking and deplorable. This speaks of the Gunda Raj & failure of law and order in the Mamta govt. People will not forgive such a govt in the future. We strongly condemn this.”

The Bengal Governor, Jagdeep Dhankar also tweeted slamming Mamata Banerjee of political violence and vendetta and demanded an impartial probe of the issue.

“Body of Shri Debendra Nath Ray, BJP MLA from Hemtabad, a reserved seat, in Uttar Dinajpur, was found hanging like this in Bindal, near his village home. People are of the clear opinion that he was first killed and then hung. His crime? He joined the BJP in 2019,” BJP Bengal’s tweet read.
