‘In the hope of ‘Vikas’, we have five daughters,’ Congress leader Jitu Patwari sparks controversy; BJP complains to NCW

Date:

Bhopal: Former former education minister of Madhya Pradesh and Congress leader Jitu Patwari sparked controversy with his sexist remarks while trying to slam the Modi government.

In a tweet on Wednesday, which has now been deleted, Jitu Patwari compared the birth of a girl child with Modi government schemes. He wrote in Hindi, “Putra ke chakkar mein 5 putri paida ho gayi. 1 notebandi, 2 GST, 3 mehengai, 4 berozgaari, 5 mandi. Parantu abhi tak ‘Vikas’ paida nahi hua.”

(Translation: In the hope of having a son, we now have 5 daughters. 1 demonetisation, 2 GST, 3 inflation, 4 unemployment, 5 slowdown. However, Vikas is not born yet.)

Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan criticised Patwari’s remarks and said, “At a time when the entire nation is proud of the sacrifices made by the likes of Rani Durgavati, Congress is busy insulting our daughters.”

“Daughters are worthy of worshiping. But BJP is trying to create controversy over one of my tweets, I would still like to insist that the entire country is still waiting for ‘Vikas’,” said Jitu Patwari in a follow-up tweet.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Sambit Patra on Wednesday approached the National Commission for Women against Patwari’s shocking remarks.

In a tweet Patra said, “please take note of this highly misogynistic tweet of an elected representative which projects daughters as unwanted & in most regressive manner.
This should not go unpunished!”

Replying to Patra, Rekha Sharma of NCW said, “sad that these people with this kind of mind set are calling themselves leaders. What are they teaching to their followers I wonder. Will ask for an explanation from him for sure”.
