Fresh chargesheets against foreign nationals in Markaz case

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police will file 12 more chargesheets against 41 foreign nationals in connection with the Tablighi Jamaat congregation at Markaz in Nizamuddin area.

Police officials say this will take up the number of chargesheets to a total of 59 which have been filed against 956 foreign nationals, belonging to 36 different countries.

The congregation, which was attended by hundreds of foreign nationals and thousands of locals, had reportedly emerged as an epicentre for the spread of COVID-19 in the country and several FIRs were registered in the matter.

On Mar 31, SHO Police Station Hazrat Nizamuddin registered a written complaint with DCP Crime Branch, wherein he alleged the violation of various government orders and directions by managers of Markaz at Banglewali Masjid, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Delhi. The violation he claimed led to spread of COVID-19 infections in the city and beyond.

The chargesheets have been filed under relevant sections of the Foreigners Act, Epidemic Diseases Act, Disaster Management Act, and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The above mentioned 956 accused are presently staying at various High Court approved places in Delhi. No one has been arrested in the case so far. Court hearings in the case have been scheduled for 25th June, 9th and 16th July, 2020.
