COVID-19 | Top 10 global developments this Monday morning

A total of 7.8 million people across the globe have contracted the coronavirus disease, while the death toll due to the infection has mounted to 433,019, according to the Johns Hopkins University. Moreover, 3.7 million people have been recovered from the virus.

Here’s are the top 10 global developments this morning:

1. French President Emmanuel Macron has announced a number of coronavirus restrictions are being lifted. From Monday cafes and restaurants can open across the country and travel to other European countries will be allowed.

2. COVID-19 tally in Brazil surpassed 867,000 on Sunday with the death toll rising to 43,000, news agency ANI quoted the country’s health ministry as saying.

3. Chinese reported 49 new coronavirus cases on Monday, including 36 more in the capital Beijing, where a fresh cluster linked to a wholesale food market has fuelled fears of a second wave of infections, news agency AFP reported.

4. Beijing has locked down 10 more neighbourhoods, CGTN and AFP reported. The decision came after staffers connected to Xinfadi wholesale market, the source of the new outbreak, tested positive for the virus.

5. England’s coronavirus lockdown should not be further lifted until the government’s contact-tracing system has proven to be “robust and effective”, the World Health Organization.

6. Hong Kong’s Disneyland theme park said on Monday it will reopen on 18 June to a reduced number of visitors and with enhanced health measures.

7. COVID-19 cases in Colombia have risen to over 50,000, the country’s Health Ministry said on Sunday. The country has reported 50,939 cases of the coronavirus and 1,667 deaths.

8. The number of deaths tied to the coronavirus has continued to decline in New York, even as much of the state marches toward fully reopening the economy, Governor Andrew M Cuomo announced Saturday.

9. Egypt will reopen all its airports on 1 July, the civil aviation minister said on Sunday.

10. Israel’s Ministry of Health reported 83 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, bringing the total to 19,055.
