COVID-19 | Top 10 developments in India this Saturday morning

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in India crossed the 3-lakh mark on Saturday after the country reported the highest single-day spike of 11,458 new cases.

With 386 deaths being reported in the last 24 hours, the death toll reached 8,884. The total cases have risen to 3,08,993, including 1,45,779 active cases, 154330 cured/discharged/migrated, according to the Health Ministry.

Here are the top developments in India this morning:

1. Maharashtra breached a lakh mark in COVID-19 cases on Friday. With 3,493 new cases, the total cases now stand at 10,1141. 129 deaths were reported yesterday, taking the death toll at 3,717.

2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi to interact with Chief Ministers of all states and union territories on 16 and 17th June. This will be PM Modi’s sixth virtual meeting with the chief ministers since the first phase of the lockdown was announced on March 24.

3. Delhi recorded the highest single-day spike after 2,137 COVID-19 positive cases reported on Friday. 71 more deaths and 667 recovered/discharged. The total number of positive cases climbed to at 36,824, including 1214 deaths and 13,398 recovered/discharged.

4. Ministry of Home Affairs clarified that while the movement of people would remain prohibited across the country from 9 pm to 5 am during the ongoing ‘Unlock 1’, there will be no restrictions on plying of buses with passengers and goods trucks on highways.

5. With 495 new COVID-19 cases, Gujarat’s count rose to 22,562 on Friday while death toll reached 1,416 with 31 more fatalities, said a health official.

6. Karnataka reported 271 new COVID-19 cases on Friday. With this, the total number of positive persons in the state has gone up to 6,516. It includes 79 deaths and 3,440 discharges.

7. Maharashtra and Delhi, two of the worst-hit states, have rejected the possibilities of extending lockdown.

8. The government on Friday further liberalised the visa restrictions imposed during the lockdown by allowing the entry of certain categories of foreigners and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) into the country.

9. Terming the situation as ‘horrific’, the Supreme Court on Friday rapped the Delhi government over its mismanagement of dead bodies and said that the treatment meted out to the Covid-19 patients was “worse than (that given to) animals”.

10. 32 new COVID-19 positive cases and two deaths reported in Uttarakhand on Friday. The total number of positive cases in the state now stands at 1,724, including 21 deaths and 947 discharged.
