With a spike of 9,996 new infections in last 24 hours, India’s COVID-19 tally reached 2,86,579 on Thursday. This is the highest single-day spike ever recorded in the country.
The death toll due to the deadly coronavirus also crossed the 8,000-mark and reached 8,102 after record 357 death in the same span of time, according to the data provided by the Union Health Ministry on Thursday.

Among the Indian states, Maharashtra is the worst hit state with over 94,000 cases and 3,400 deaths, while the southern state of Tamil Nadu is the second worst hit state with 36,841 cases and 326 deaths. Meanwhile, Delhi remains to be the third worst hit state with 32,810 cases and 984 deaths. Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia had on Tuesday said that Delhi may witness around 5.5 lakh cases by the end of July.
