Fact Check: This man did not kill the pregnant elephant in Kerala; here’s the truth

After the social media outrage on the death of a pregnant elephant after eating a pineapple stuffed with crackers in Kerala, a picture post of an elephant and a man started doing the rounds on the internet. It is being claimed that the man in the picture is responsible for the killing of the animal.

The text on the picture read: ‘In Kerala, he killed the pregnant elephant with a pineapple, and should be severely punished for killing the animal’.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found that the claim attached to it is fake.

When we cropped the picture and put it through Reverse Image Search, we found a report by The Indian Express, dated February 23, 2018, featuring the same picture.

The title of the report read, ‘Kerala man beaten to death on suspicion of stealing food: Two detained, BJP calls for bandh’.

According to the report, Madhu, a 27-year-old tribal youth of Kaduka Manna region in Attappady, was caught by a group of people, tied up for several hours and reportedly beaten to death on suspicion of stealing rice and other food items from shops in the area.

The incident was also covered by India Times on February 23, 2018.
