COVID-19 | India overtakes Italy to become 6th worst-hit nation; biggest single-day spike inches closer to 10k cases

India has been witnessing an ominously steady increase in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases over the past week. With a steep spike of 9,887 new positive cases in the last 24 hours, India’s COVID-19 count touched 2,36,657 on Saturday surpassing Italy’s latest tally of over 2.34 lakh, taking India to the sixth spot among countries with the highest caseloads of the virus.

The country reported the highest number of deaths as well in the last 24 hours- 294 deaths- taking the death toll to 6,642.

Maharashtra remains the worst-hit State as the total number of COVID-19 positive cases has now reached 80,229. While the total number of active cases in the state stands at 42,224.

In Tamil Nadu, 28,694 cases have been detected so far while Delhi has reported 26,334 coronavirus cases.

The increase in the number of cases in the country comes after the government gave considerable relaxations to the people in the fourth phase of the nationwide lockdown followed by the measures for Unlock 1.0.

Moreover, India has ramped up testing to detect COVID-19 cases in the country. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total of 45,24,317 samples have been tested as on Jun 6, 2020, 9 AM. The number of samples tested in 24 hours is 1,37,938.
