Fact check: Jack Ma did not say ‘for people in business, 2020 is really just a year for staying alive’

As the world is struggles to cope with the Coronavirus pandemic, the global economy has taken a huge hit as businesses around the world are finding it difficult to function effectively amidst lockdowns.

During such difficult times, a quote attributed to billionaire entrepreneur and co-founder of Alibaba Group, Jack Ma, is being circulated online.

For people in business, 2020 is really just a year for staying alive. Don’t even talk about your dreams or plans. Just make sure you stay alive. If you can stay alive, then you would have made a profit already, ” the quote read.

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found it to be fake.

We checked his social media account but did not find any quote even close to the one in question.

Jack Ma joined Twitter recently, on March 16, 2020. We found that most of his tweets were about his campaign to deliver medical supplies around the world, laced with words of encouragement.

“One world, one fight!” he said in one of his tweets dated March 22, 2020.

Speaking to an Indonesian fact-checking website, Alibaba Group Indonesia’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Dian Safitri clarified that the quote in question did not come from Jack Ma.

“There is no record that Jack Ma ever delivered the message,” Dian was quoted as saying.

On further research, we found his interview with CGTN in which he said that ‘Internet to be the lifeblood of enterprises after COVID-19 pandemic.’

In the interview, he said that COVID-19 would change the way people do business. He further added that e-commerce would be the key for companies to survive, for countries to prosper, and for the world economy to move.

Earlier, the same quote was making the rounds in the name of industrialist Ratan Tata, who later clarified that it has been falsely attributed to him.

The above information proves that there is no record for Jack Ma making the statement being circulated in his name and the quote is in conflict with his other tweets and statements regarding COVID-19 till now.
