Fact Check: Old video of turbulence in a flight shared as the recent Pakistan flight crash

Date:

Following the horrific crash of the ill-fated Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight in Karachi on May 22, 2020, several videos are doing the rounds on internet, with claims that these are the final moments before the crash. One such video shows passengers onboard panicking in fear.

The caption of the video read: ‘#WATCH | Just before PIA Plane crash in #Karachi #Pakistan😭😭😭

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above video and found that the claim attached to it is FAKE.

When we extracted the keyframes of the video through InVid and put them through Reverse Image Search, we found the video in question on CNN’s YouTube dated May 4, 2016.

The title of the video read, ‘Heavy turbulence scares passengers on Ethiad flight’.

The description of the video read, ‘Dewi Rachmayani took this video from inside an Etihad Airways flight traveling from Abu Dhabi to Jakarta when turbulence shook the cabin’.

The incident has been covered by various news organisations. Read the reports here and here.

Hence, the above information proves that the video that is being circulated shows turbulence in a flight in 2016 and not the PIA flight crash.
