Fact Check: Old picture of a Hindu priest at Iftar party re-shared with misleading claims

Date:

A picture of a priest is doing the rounds on social media in which he can be seen having a meal with a few Muslim men. It has been claimed that he recently attended an Iftar and he is the one who campaigned for Congress’ Digvijay Singh against Sadhvi Pragya.

At the time of filing this report, the above post was shared by over 8,500 Facebook users.

The text with the picture- shared on May 20th, 2020, in Hindi read: “साध्वी प्रज्ञा के खिलाफ दिग्विजय सिंह का प्रचार करने वाला संत लखनऊ में दिखा रोजा खोलते हुए ..

हिन्दू मित्रोँ अभी भी समय है

हो सके तो जाग जाओ…!”

(Translation: The saint who campaigned for Digvijay Singh against Sadhvi Pragya was seen opening Roza in Lucknow .. Hindu friends still have time Wake up if possible …!)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the viral picture and found that the claim attached to the picture is misleading.

On putting the picture through a Reverse Image Search, we came across a tweet by Uttar Pradesh politician, Shivpal Singh Yadav. In the tweet, he had posted a series of pictures which had the uncropped version of the above picture.

In the tweet dated May 17, 2019, Shivpal Yadav had written “कीर्ति शिखर अपार्टमेंट्स, लखनऊ में आयोजित रोजा अफ्तार कार्यक्रम में शामिल हुआ।”

(Translation: Attended an Iftar party at Kirti Shikhar Apartments, Lucknow).

Hence, the above information establishes that the priest in the viral picture did not attend the Iftar party recently as the picture in question is old.
