COVID-19: Top 10 developments in India this Wednesday morning

The total number of coronavirus cases in the country stands at 49,391, including 1,694 deaths and 14,182 recoveries. The total number of active cases in India is 33,514.

Here are the top developments in India this morning:

1. India’s mortality rate has increased to 3.4%. This was 3.1% last week.

2. Telangana Tuesday became the first state in the country to extend lockdown till May 29 — 12 days after a nationwide lockdown is scheduled to end on May 17.

3. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Delhi crossed the 5,000-mark on Tuesday. With 206 new cases getting reported in the national capital, its tally rose to 5,104 while the death toll stood at 64.

4. Liquor shops in Mumbai will remain closed from Wednesday as the Mumbai Municipal Corporation has decided to let only essential services function in the city.

5. India will operate 64 flights until May 13 and use three Navy ships, as part of Phase I of an evacuation plan, to bring home nearly 15,000 Indians stranded overseas.

6. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday chaired a meeting of the task force on coronavirus vaccine development, drug discovery, diagnosis and testing and took a detailed review of the current status of India’s efforts in these areas.

7. The Centre has issued the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for movement of Indian Nationals stranded outside the country, as well as, for those persons stranded in India who are desirous to travel abroad for urgent reasons.

8. JEE Main will now be held between July 18 and July 23. NEET will be held on July 26 and JEE Advanced in August: HRD Minister

9. The government hiked excise duty on petrol and diesel to shore up revenues as demand remains subdued due to the lockdown.

10. Bihar government has issued an order against health workers ‘missing in action’. The state govt will now take action against them under the Disaster Management Act 2005, Epidemic Act, 1897.
