Did Tablighi Jamaat’s Chief donate Rs 1 crore to the PM CARES fund? Here’s the truth

Date:

Amid the coronavirus crisis, a picture of the front page of a newspaper is being circulated on social media. According to the newspaper report, Tablighi Jamaat’s Chief, Muhammad Saad, has donated Rs 1 crore to the PM relief fund.

Muhammad Saad Kandhalvi or Maulana Saad is the chief of Tablighi Jamaat Markaz in Delhi’s Nizamuddin. The place has emerged as a hotspot of coronavirus following a religious gathering.

The headline of the newspaper ‘News Letter’ reads, “On March 28th, Molana Saad donated an amount of 1 core to the PM MODI Relief Fund.”

FACT CHECK

We checked the above post and found it to be morphed.

We found that ‘The News Letter’ is one of Northern Ireland’s prominent daily newspapers, published Monday to Saturday.

We noticed that the dateline in the above picture reads March 30, 2020. We checked the archive list from that date on their website and did not find any such news coverage.

A relevant keyword search led up to a report by BBC, published on June 6, 2019, featuring the front page of ‘ The news Letter’.

We notice, that in the original picture, everything except for the report on Maulana and COVID-19 was the same. In fact, the original report covered President Trump’s visit to Ireland.

The above information proves that the viral news clipping is FAKE.
