Robert Downey Jr. is a legend in his own right. He is the perfect superhero in ‘Iron Man’ and a great teammate in the ‘Avengers’ cast as well as an inquisitive detective in Sherlock. This year marks the 54th birthday of this talented actor and while he is greatly known for his portrayal of Tony Stark in ‘Iron Man’ and the Avengers series and Sherlock, he has a long list of performances that leave you mesmerized.

Robert Downey Jr took up the tough role of portraying Charlie Chaplin in the 1992 comedy drama titled ‘Chaplin.’ The actor was praised for his comic timing and balancing the intense scenes, gaining immense popularity as an actor. He was also nominated for Oscars in the ‘Best Actor in a leading role category’ even though the film did not really do well at box office.

This film is known for Robert Downey Jr’s performance as Kirk Lazarus, a method actor who takes it too far in all of his performances. He plays an Australian actor who undergoes surgery to perform the role of an African American. This is one of his most iconic performances and was also nominated for an Oscar in the ‘Best Supporting Actor Category’.

3. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ put the stamp on Downey Jr. as one of the most sought after actors. It is a black comedy with where his performance as Harry Lockhart, a crook and ends up auditioning for a role while running away from cops. His performance was appreciated by the audiences and critics alike. Watch it for his witty dialogues and charm.
4. A Scanner Darkly 
It is a Richard Linklater film with a difference. It is one of the performances that also demonstrates his range as an actor. He plays a drug addict James, who lives with the protagonist – Keanu Reeves’ character. This was a new style of execution as it is a rotoscoped animation movie, so it was shot and then converted to a graphics format, just like a graphic novel.
5. Zodiac 
He plays a sharp reporter, Paul Avery who has swagger and wit, in this intense thriller, Zodiac. He starts off as sharp and likeable but slowly makes the audience uncomfortable as he becomes obsessed with the Zodiac killer like his co-worker cartoonist turned codebreaker. The character arc of Downey in the film stands out and you relate to him as he just a guy who seems lost and can’t use addition to solve his problems. Zodiac rocks two performances- Jake Gyllenhaal as well as Robert Downey Jr’s.
