COVID-19: WHO finds PM Modi’s relief measures praiseworthy

The World Health Organization (WHO) in its Press briefing on Wednesday in Geneva said that the relief measures adopted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi which will benefit more than 700 million people is a step in the right direction to reduce the economic and social fallout of this deadly coronavirus which threatens to wreak havoc in the lives of people, especially the most vulnerable sections of the society.

Making these remarks, the Director- General of the WHO, Dr Tedros Adhanom said that there is a need to ensure that developing nations are protected from the fall out of this virus.

Here are some of the other important points made by the Director- General during the briefing:

1. The world is seeing a disaster bigger than the destruction caused by wars and acts of terrorism.

2. In the coming days, an alarming situation will present itself before the world. The world will witness over 1 million positive cases and over 50,000 deaths.

3. Everyday, our understanding of this novel virus is growing and researchers are hard at work to help mitigate the effects of this virus.

4. Over 74 countries have joined the field trials for the vaccination and this will facilitate a better understanding to the cure of this virus. Various Fixed Dosed Combinations of drugs are being experimented with.

5. WHO and other international financial organizations such as IMF, World Bank are working towards calculating a special package for developing nations who tend to suffer the most due to the lockdown that has been effected throughout the world.

6. Effective lockdowns can prevent community transmission of the virus.

Globally, the positive cases stand at 911,308 cases and 45, 497 deaths have been reported as on Wednesday.
