COVID-19 | Top 10 Developments in India this Tuesday Morning

With the number of confirmed positives COVID-19 cases that have now sailed past 1000 in the country, the developments and actions related with regards to the coronavirus spread are rapid.

Here are the top 10 developments in India this Tuesday Morning-

  1. Addressing a press conference, the officials of the Union Health Ministry stated that there was no immediate plan to extend the 21-day lockdown period, which entered its sixth day on Monday.

2. During the press conference, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Health Lav Agarwal said 92 new cases and four deaths due to coronavirus have been reported in India since Sunday, taking total cases to 1251 and the number of deaths to 32.

3. Later in the evening on Monday, PM Modi held another video conference meeting with 130 Indian missions abroad and said the country has taken unprecedented and early steps from mid-January to reduce the risk of importing the coronavirus infection and prevent a large outbreak.

4.  PM Modi also praised the heads of mission for their efforts to evacuate Indians stranded in some of the epicentres of the crisis and exhorted them to take five specific steps including paying close attention to the evolving international political and economic situation and ensuring their own health and safety as well as of their teams and families.

5. With fresh cases of coronavirus being reported from various parts of the country including in Rajasthan, Haryana, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Noida in the national capital region, the Delhi Police cordoned off a major area in Nizamuddin where several people showed symptoms of coronavirus after taking part in a religious gathering a few days ago. Police said the gathering of around 200 people was organised without permission from authorities.

6. As per latest updates, the Delhi government has converted its 11 schools into night shelters in a bid to help migrant workers stay in the city during the lockdown period, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said. Sisodia also urged the poor and migrant workers to utilise food and accommodation facilities provided by the Delhi government.

7.  The Supreme Court, earlier in the day, heard a plea about migrant workers and said that the panic and fear are becoming a bigger problem than coronavirus. The apex court sought a status report from the Centre by Tuesday on the measures taken to prevent the exodus of migrant workers.

8. In another major development, the Indian Railway Board has told its zones that they might be required to convert up to 20,000 coaches into isolation wards as part of their preparedness to fight the coronavirus outbreak in the country. In a letter to all the zonal general managers on Monday, the board said that initially 5,000 coaches will be converted.
