The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Thursday said that the spirit and teaching of Mahatma Gandhi is all the more relevant and should be implemented in letter and spirit. This was with respect to the ongoing riots in the national capital.
The UN Chief’s Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that:
“Throughout his life, the Secretary General has been deeply inspired by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. And today the spirit of Gandhi is needed more than ever and it is essential to create conditions for true community reconciliation”.
The Secretary General also expressed his shock at the large number of causalities and called for maximum restraint in the riots that have claimed about 42 lives.

In this regard, Dujarric said:
“The Secretary General has been following the situation in India and…concerning the violence closely and is saddened by the reports of deaths that we’ ve seen over the past few days in New Delhi and again reiterates, as he is done in other places, his call for maximum restraint and for violence to be avoided”.
However, on Thursday, Raveesh Kumar, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs rejected all foreign interferences and said that top law enforcement officers are working towards brining the situation under control and these statements issued were ill informed and unwarranted.
