Sushant Lok, Gurgaon, residents protest for right to access public road

Date:

The residents of Sushant Lok phase-I, Gurgaon, organised a protest march on Sunday 23, at Umeed Marg, the sole road that connects Sushant Lok 1A with the main MG Road, Gurgaon.

For the past few weeks, the main arterial road between MG Metro Station and Sushant Lok & DLF Phase IV area called Umeed Marg, was being unscrupulously controlled by a few residents by illegally erecting gates that were manned by private guards. A few influential residents and commercial establishments located on this road were taking law in their hands by using their discretion on traffic movement on this road.

Sometimes, they made it ‘One Way’ traffic and sometimes they did not allow cabs and evens school buses to ply.

Umeed marg connects the main MG Road (Mall Road), to the entire Sushant Lok and DLF Phase IV area. Such arbitrary act was causing traffic jams on both sides, altercations between unruly private guards & passersby and security threat to the residents of this entire area especially women travellers coming late at night from the airport and elsewhere, who were forced to argue with the guards.

Complaints had been lodged with DCP Gurgaon, DTP Gurgaon and also at the Chief Minister’s online window. But this did not yield much results.

In order to bring this menace in order and to the notice of Gurgaon authorities, a peace march was organized at 11:40 AM on Sunday, February 23, at the site. Hundreds of residents living in laned houses in Sushant Lok, DLF Phase IV, Mapple and condos such as Luburnum, The Ivy, Chanderlok and Vakil market areas and Holtec Centre etc participated in the protest.

The protest was aimed at sorting out the road issue, that forms the main connection for scores of people who live in Sushant Lok.

Many residents complained of being manhandled by the guards who stood with lathis at both ends of the road. Even Uber’s or autos were not allowed before the protest march finally took shape. Residents complained that coming back from the metro station was a nightmare.

The protest march, that involved hundreds of residents, ended at the MG Road SHO’s office where some positive decisions were taken.

Post this, the road has been opened up as a one way for the public. The road behind City Centre Mall will be used as the other one-way road.

This rule now holds good for everyone including residents of the Umeed Road.

A sign, that public outrage is greater than the collective unison of a few powerful people.
