In the Delhi Assembly elections 2020, 672 candidates are in the fray for 70 assembly seats for which the counting will take place on February 11. There are over 1.47 crore eligible voters to exercise their franchise in the Delhi elections 2020.

When Association for Democratic reforms (ADR) analysed poll affidavits filed by the candidates with the Election Commission of India it has been found that the highest number of candidates have declared criminal cases in over a decade.

Here are some facts about the candidates:

  1. The election will see the highest share of crorepatis, highly educated, women and older candidates in more than ten years.
  2. Out of the 672 candidates contesting the election, nearly 20% of them have some criminal record registered against them.
  3. 32 candidates have cases related to crimes against women, one of them for rape, while four candidates have cases related to attempt to murder. Eight candidates have a case related to hate speech.
  4. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has the highest number of criminal cases which is 13 in number.
  5. Of all the candidates contesting the election, 36% are crorepatis. This figure is higher for the three big parties — 83% candidates of the Congress, 73% of AAP and 70% of the BJP are crorepatis
  6. AAP candidate from Mundka constituency, Dharampal Lakra, has ₹292 crore worth of assets which is much more than the total assets of the second wealthiest candidate Pramila Tokas who is contesting from RK Puram constituency, who owns assets worth ₹81 crore.
  7. This election also has the highest number of women candidates (11.8%) ever since 2008.
  8. This year only 8.5% of candidates are up to 30 years old while 27.5% of candidates are between 31 and 40 years old. This is the lowest since 2008.

This analysis by ADR is an attempt to educate the voters about the candidates they seek to cast a vote in favour of. It also aims to demystify the profile of candidates and hopes to help make voters the correct choice.
