Fact Checked: Old video of demonstration shared as recent protest against NRC

Amid several protests in different parts of the country over the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 and NRC, a video has surfaced on the internet in which a large gathering (mostly Sikh) can be seen staging a protest and swinging swords. It has been claimed that the video is from Punjab during the protest against NRC.

The caption in Hindi read: “एनआरसी के खिलाफ आज पंजाब में विरोध प्रदर्शन के दौरान कोई भी पुलिसकर्मी मौजूद नहीं था”

(Translation: “No policeman was present during a protest in Punjab today against NRC.”

At the time of filing this report, the above video was shared by over 22,000 Facebook users.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above video post and found the claim attached to the video to be FAKE.

On putting the keyframes of the video through Reverse Image Search, we came across the same video on YouTube which was uploaded on August 20th, 2019.

Though NewsMobile cannot independently verify the exact location or timeline of the video, but the above information proves that the viral video is old and is not from the recent protests against CAA and NRC.
