The list now has a total of 30,000 species that are under threat of becoming extinct.

The director-general Grethel Aguilar of IUCN said that climate change is adding to multiple threats species are facing and that there is an urgent need to solve the issue. The IUCN also said it had noticed a decline in 73 species since the last analysis.

These species are under major threat from pollution, climate change and overexploitation.

Climate change and rising temperatures have already affected the oceans and many underwater species especially fishes and sharks.

The IUCN did mention some successes like reviving of the Guam Rail, a bird that was declared extinct.

Two global IUCN gatherings will be held in 2020, one in June in France and the other one will be held in China, in October.
