Protests over Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Rape in India’ remark rock both houses of Parliament

Uproar over Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Rape in India’ remark led to sloganeering and protests by the BJP MPs in both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha on Friday.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on PM Narendra Modi on Thursday over crimes against women and said that the PM Modi had launched ‘Make in India’ but nowadays it is ‘Rape in India’.

“Narendra Modi had said ‘Make in India’ but nowadays wherever you look, it is ‘Rape in India’. In Uttar Pradesh Narendra Modi’s MLA raped a woman, then she met with an accident but Narendra Modi did not utter a word,” alleged Gandhi speaking at a public rally in Godda.

“Narendra Modi says ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ but he never told from whom should the daughters be saved? They should be saved from BJP’s MLA,” he added. Gandhi also targeted the media in the country and alleged that it was working for a few ‘Indian industrialists’.

The attack remark from Rahul Gandhi mustered a lot of criticism and protests from the BJP MPs in the Parliament as they raised slogans of ‘Rahul Gandhi maafi maango’ as they demanded an apology for the Congress leader.

“This is first time in history that a leader is giving a clarion call that Indian women should be raped. Is this Rahul Gandhi’s message to the people of the country?”, said Union Minister Smriti Irani in Lok Sabha.

Expressing shock over the ‘Rape in India’ comment Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Lok Sabha said, “Mein toh ahat hua hun, poora desh ahat hua hai. Kya aise log sadan mein aa sakte hain jo aise shabd istemaal karte hain? Kya unko poore sadan hi nahi balki poore desh se maafi nahi mangni chahiye.”

Speaking in Rahul’s defense, DMK leader Kanimozhi said, “PM said ‘Make in India’, which we respect, but what is happening in country? That is what Rahul Gandhi intended to say. Unfortunately Make in India is not happening and women in the country are being raped. This is a concern.”

Rahul Gandhi refused to issue an apology as he spoke to the media.

“I have a clip on my phone in which Narendra Modi ji is calling Delhi a ‘rape capital’,will tweet it so that everyone can see. Just to deflect attention from protests in North East, this is being made an issue by BJP”, he said.
