Head to Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival this December to experience its myriad traditions

Date:

If offbeat travel is what excites you, then Nagaland’s Hornbill Festival is definitely a place you shouldn’t be missing.

Named after a bird, the Hornbill Festival, is one of the largest celebrations of the indigenous warrior tribes of Nagaland, in India’s far north east region. The hornbill is admired by the Nagas and is reflected in tribal folklore, dances, songs and stories.

In 2000, the State Government decided to give this festival a larger definition and created a week long festival to coincide with the celebration of Nagaland Statehood Day that falls on 1st December. This year it is being celebrated from December 1 to December 10.

The festival aims at showcasing the culture, ethos and traditions of Nagaland. The various tribal clans in Nagaland come together to bring their regional perspectives to the festival.

Where is it Held?
Most of the activities are held at the Kisama Heritage Village. This isn’t far from the capital Kohima. The nearest airport and railway station are at Dimapur which is about 2-3 hours from Kohima.
Alternatively, one can also drive from Guwahati. The stretch takes about 8-9 hours.

The Hornbill Rock Contest, which happens in the evenings after sundown, has been held in Dimapur the last couple of years. Around 20 bands take part and compete.

What Happens at the Hornbill Festival?
The festival is organized by the state government and is attended by all of Nagaland’s major tribes. It features traditional arts, dances, folk songs, and indigenous games. All this takes place amid immaculate replicas of tribal huts, complete with wood carvings and hollow log drum instruments, which are beat in haunting symphony at the end of the day.
There are plenty of handicraft stalls, food stalls (smoked pork is a local delicacy), and heady rice beer to enjoy as well. Plus, a film festival, adventure activities, and kids’ carnival. And don’t miss the highlight of the festival – the Naga chili eating competition! It sure is a ‘hot’ event!

Where to Stay
The Hornbill Festival is one of the top tourists draws in Nagaland, so plan in advance.
Kohima has many hotels and homestays that can be accessed on travel sites.

If you are open to adventure, then camping at Kite Manja is a another beautiful option. Facilities include tents, sleeping bags, eco-toilets, water, common area, phone charging points, and kitchen. Expect a lot of bonfire, jamming and other activities.

So, pack your bags, book the tickets and head to an exotic location such as Nagaland and enjoy in the natural surroundings. The Hornbill Festival is the icing on the cake!
