Azadi march rattles ‘selected PM’ of Pakistan, protestors demand his resignation

Date:

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been besieged by a wave of protests called by the opposition leaders led by Maulana Fazl Ur Rahman of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, seeking Khan’s resignation.

These protests have rocked the entire nation before entering the capital city of Islamabad last Friday. A deadline has been set for Khan to resign. The main Faizabad inter change connecting the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi has been blocked and normal life has been paralyzed in the capital city. Lakhs of people have turned up in the capital and are part of the protests.

The opposition leaders have asked the ‘selected Prime Minister’ to step down amidst rising economic woes such as general inflation (around 12%), rising food prices inflation and break down of the law and order machinery across the nation.

It has been barely a year and half since Imran Khan won a controversial election in August 2018. Massive rigging, intimidation of opponents and other electoral malpractices were the characteristics of the namesake polls that were conducted. The role of the Pakistan Army and its notorious intelligence agency, the Inter-Service Intelligence (ISI) is prominent in this ‘selection process’, according to some analysts.

“Such a large protest which has brought the capital city to a standstill cannot be organized without the support of the Pakistani army and it appears that the willy old Maulana has the support of the Khalai Makluks (a term used to refer to the ISI). Imran khan only appears to be face of the current disillusionment and the army is trying to hide its failures, even as it controls every aspect of life in Pakistan” says Jyotsna Mehra, a young scholar who has graduated in South Asian studies from the University of Oxford.

She also adds that there could be a rise in factionalism within the Pakistan Army.

The administration is trying to cope up with the situation but is clearly failing. Former Mayor of Karachi City and Human Rights activist, Arif Aajakia in a video released last week slammed the government for forcibly seizing containers meant to export goods and placing them on the highways leading to the capital. He slammed the administration for curbing internet connectivity and imposing restrictions even as Pakistan expresses ‘concern’ over India doing the same in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. He said that India has removed most of the restrictions that were put in place to restrict Pakistani backed elements from spreading havoc in the former state.

It needs to be seen what Khan will do even as the deadlines expires for his resignation, a faction of the Pakistan Army has extended its support to the PM. DG ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor, popularly referred to as the ‘Twitter General’ or as ‘Goebbels Ghafoora’ has tweeted expressing support to the ‘selected PM’.
