Is this a picture of Muslim Congresswoman at a Al’ Qaida training camp in Somalia? Here’s the truth

Date:

A picture of a woman with a weapon is being circulated on social media with a claim that she is the Congresswoman Ilhan Omar.

The text with the photo states: “Here is your precious Muslim congresswoman at a Al’ Qaida training camp in Somalia. She is trying to get this picture blocked and me banned for posting it. Facebook has banned me twice because the pic is considered offensive? Please retweet pic…”

FACT CHECK

When NewsMobile fact-checked the picture, we found the claim to be fake.

On putting the image through Reverse Image Search, we found the picture on AP Images.

“A woman recruit of the Somali Army checks her automatic weapon at a military training campus at Halane, Mogadishu, on Feb. 25, 1978. On the right is her instructor. President Siad Barre said at a news conference that regular Somali military units have not yet been dispatched in the Ogaden region to avoid international complications. (AP Photo)” the caption read.

As per the caption, the picture was taken in 1978 while Omar was born in 1982.

On Oct 22, 2019, in a tweet, Omar called it propaganda to stir up hate.

The above information proves that the woman in the pictures is not Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and hence, the caption attached to the picture is FAKE.
