Transport strike in Delhi-NCR today against hefty fines under new MV Act

Date:

New Delhi: Transport associations in Delhi and NCR have called for a strike on Thursday as a protest against the steep hike in penalties for road traffic violations under the newly amended Motor Vehicles Act.

The United Front of Transport Associations (UFTA), an umbrella unit of about 41 transport associations announced on Wednesday that privately-owned transport vehicles such as buses (except DTC), auto-rickshaws, cabs and trucks will not ply on city roads on Thursday.

The UFTA stated that no private commercial vehicle will be running on Delhi roads from 6 am to 9.30 pm on Thursday.

The strike is being held to highlight issues including hiked penalties, Section 44AE of Income Tax Act, Rs 5 lakh cap on payment of vehicular insurance by insurance companies and also legislations on the health insurance of drivers.

The Motor Vehicles Act, which came into effect on September 1, made several changes to traffic fines. However, many states have resisted the amended Act and refused to enforce the fines.
