On Thursday, Union Minister Piyush Goyal became a trend on social media and was trolled over his statement where he said that ‘maths didn’t help Einstein discover gravity’.

In the viral video of the briefing, Goyal says: “Don’t get into the calculations that you see on television. If you look at a $5 trillion-economy, the country will have to grow at 12%, today its growing at 6%-7%, don’t get into those maths. Maths never helped Einstein discover gravity.”

In the statement, Goyal explains that what he meant was one shouldn’t go by past calculations, that past maths didn’t help Einstein ‘discover’ gravity. He said that it was misinterpreted and what he meant to was that if one went by ‘structured formula and past knowledge’, there wouldn’t be any ‘innovation in the world’.

FACT CHECK

Goyal was pilloried for saying that 1) Einstein ‘discovered’ gravity 2) Maths didn’t help.

The concept of ‘gravity’ was first discovered by Isaac Newton in 1687 and was ‘re-discovered’ two decades later when Einstein it explained in the ‘General Theory of Relativity’ in 1915.

Goyal however slammed the ‘mischievous and baseless’ narrative. He said in a statement: “There is a very mischievous and baseless narrative sought to be presented about my closing comments at the board of trade meeting this morning.”
