Former BJP leader Shatrughan Sinha, who is known for his staunch criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, played a different tune on Sunday and termed the PM’s Independence Day address as “extremely courageous” and “thought-provoking”.
Sinha, who switched to the Congress earlier this year ahead of the Lok Sabha polls after years of dissent with the BJP, profusely praised PM Modi for highlighting the key problems the country is facing.
“Since I am famous or infamous for calling a spade a spade, I must admit here, Hon’ble PM @narendermodi @PMOIndia that your speech from the #RedFort on 15th Aug’19 was extremely courageous, well researched and thought-provoking. Superb delivery of the key problems facing the country,” Sinha’s tweet read.

In his speech, Modi had mentioned three key challenges for the country: population explosion, plastic pollution and not to regard wealth creators with suspicion.
The actor-turned-politician tweeted that Modi certainly deserved to be applauded and appreciated as he “hit the nail right on the head, by speaking out on vital issues with a plan for a forward-looking India”
Sinha, who joined the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha elections this year after BJP refused him a ticket from Bihar’s Patna Sahib, lost to Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad.
Apart from Sinha, former finance minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram had lauded the PM for raising the issue of population explosion in his speech.
All of us must welcome three announcements made by the PM on I-Day
> Small family is a patriotic duty
> Respect wealth creators
> Shun single-use plastic— P. Chidambaram (@PChidambaram_IN) August 16, 2019
