RIP Sushma Swaraj: India’s people centric diplomacy lady

Date:

Sushma Swaraj, one of India’s best-known politician and former External Affairs Minister of India, today passed away. A politician with a large heart and a sense of humour, she will be remembered for her people-centric diplomacy.

When she took over as the Foreign Minister in 2014 in the Narendra Modi government, she reinvented diplomacy with her direct connection with people.

She became the first port of call for any Indian in distress and was responsible for the pro-people connect of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomacy.

Sushma Swaraj

The leader knew she was fighting a tough battle grappling with her ill health and her taxing schedule as the foreign Minister but she continued and lasted the full five-year term as the Foreign Minister, only to announce just ahead of the elections that she will not contest the elections.

While the intention was genuine it didn’t blend well coming just ahead of the elections. She didn’t find a place in the Narendra Modi Government 2.0 but she continued with the same spirit supporting the government through her tweets and messages like a loyal soldier of the party, she joined as a young politician.

In her death, India has lost a towering leader who had a heart much larger that is a rarity amongst the political class today.
