Today in Parliament

Date:

Today in Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Rajya Sabha replying to the ‘Motion Of Thanks on the President’s address.

His speech in the upper house comes a day after replying to the Motion of Thanks on President’s address in the lower house or the Lok Sabha.

PM Modi said, “This election has been a very significant one… After decades, a government returning with a full majority shows the way in which the citizens/electorate were thinking.”

Here are some major updates:

  1. Starting his speech in the upper house, PM Modi said, “The lynching in Jharkhand has pained me. It has saddened others too. But, some here in the Rajya Sabha are calling Jharkhand a hub of lynching. Is this fair? Why are they insulting a whole state? None of us have the right to insult the state of Jharkhand.”

2. Talking about his party’s spectacular victory, PM Modi said: “It is after long that a government with a full majority won once again with a full majority. In this mandate, we see the wish of the people for stability. In fact, this trend of stable governments is being seen in many states as well.”

 3. In her maiden speech in Parliament, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra warned that prevalent signs suggest that India is moving towards fascism.

4. Speaking on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address BJP leader K J Alphons in Rajya Sabha said that minorities have never been safer in the country than under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

5. Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury accused the government of using ‘suppressive’ tactics against the media.

6. “My friends in Congress have not been able to digest victory. They have not been able to accept defeat. I do not consider this to be a healthy sign in a democracy,” PM said.

7. Tamil Nadu’s CPI leader D Raja calls the water crisis in the state as “unprecedented”. “Despite rain water harvest, Chennai is facing severe drinking water crisis.

8. AAP leader Sanjay Singh also addressed the water crisis in Delhi in the upper house.

Moreover, The Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to grant an urgent hearing on a petition seeking a direction to the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to appoint a Leader of Opposition in the 17th Lok Sabha.

While AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi asked why the prime minister was not saying anything on the killing of Muslims in hate violence.

Targeting PM Modi for his comments in Lok Sabha on Muslims, he also said if someone was making comments like let Muslims be in the gutter, then why was the prime minister not giving reservation to Muslims if he wants to uplift the community.

The ongoing session, which began on June 17, will continue till July 26. The first session of Lok Sabha will provide 30 sittings spread over 40 days in Lok Sabha and 27 sittings spread over 37 days sittings in the Rajya Sabha.

The Economic Survey will be presented on July 4 followed by the Union Budget for 2019-20 on July 5.
