Today in Parliament, the BJP MP Om Birla from Rajasthan’s Kota, was unanimously elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker. A motion moved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to choose Om Birla as Lok Sabha Speaker was passed by voice vote in the Parliament.

Congratulating Birla, PM Modi said, “It is a matter of great pride for the House and we all congratulate Om Birla Ji on being unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Many MPs know Birla Ji well. He has served in the state of Rajasthan as well.”

Here are some updates from the Parliament:

  1. Addressing the House after being unanimously elected as the speaker, Om Birla said he will run the House in an impartial manner, while asserting that the chair should not be biased.
  2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduces council of ministers and cabinet ministers to the Lok Sabha.
  3. Rajya Sabha MP Ramdas Athawale, in his witty tone, took a dig at Rahul Gandhi while giving welcome speech on election of Om Birla.

4. PM Modi Congratulates new Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, saying Om Birla has been in public life for years. He began as a student leader and has been serving society since then, without a break.

5. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary to newly-elected Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla: “Khuda se kya maangu tere vaaste, sada khushiyon se bhare hon tere raaste, hansi tere chehre pe rahe is tarah, khushboo phoolon ke saath rehti hai jis tarah”


Meanwhile on Wednesday evening, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened an all-party meeting wherein the heads of the political parties were presented to discuss the concept of ‘One Nation, One Election’ among other things.

Briefing the media after the meeting, Union Minister Rajnath Singh said that the government will form a committee to study the feasibility of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘One Nation, One Election’.

Several opposition parties including the Congress gave it a miss. Those that had no representation at the meeting include NDA ally Shiv Sena and opposition parties DMK, TDP, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP), and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also host a dinner for all the members of the parliament on Thursday, June 20. Also, President Ram Nath Kovind will address the joint session of both the houses of the parliament.

The first session of Lok Sabha will provide 30 sittings spread over 40 days in Lok Sabha and 27 sittings spread over 37 days sittings in the Rajya Sabha.

The government will introduce several key bills, including triple talaq. The budget will be presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on July 5.
