At least 12 people were killed and 134 injured, as an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 on the Richter scale, struck in the Sichuan province, South China in the evening of Monday, June 17, 2019.
On Tuesday morning , June 18, the Yibin city government posted the casualty toll on various social media handles. Local news agencies reported about the ongoing rescue efforts underway in the quake struck area.
The earthquake also led to the collapse of a hotel in Changning county and damaged some roads. The city has been receiving heavy rains since last night’s calamity,adding to the misery.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the epicenter was 16 kilometres below the surface of the place it struck. Several firefighting crews and other rescue personnel, have been deployed in the area by The Ministry of Emergency Management. The Ministry and the National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration have dispatched 5,000 tents, 10,000 folding beds and 20,000 quilts to the quake-hit areas.
According to sources, areas near the epicentre, Shuanghe and Meidong towns, have lost telecommunication signals and are stuck under heavy rainfall. Strong tremors were felt in several other neighbouring regions, but no casualties were reported.
