There are many festivals which are celebrated in different parts of the world, which we are not aware of. Apart from being unknown, they are unusual and unconventional. Each festival has its own unique history, characteristics and function. So today, we will look at the top 10 unusual festivals of the world.

Fireflies Festival, Mumbai, India

Fireflies festival takes place every year in the month of June, during pre-monsoon. This event takes place in the villages around Mumbai and Pune Rajmachi Village, Siddhagad Wadi, Prabalmachi village, Bhandardara, Ghatghar, Kothaligad, Kondane Caves and Purushwadi. You can enjoy the beauty of nature amidst glowing fireflies, which is a visual retreat. There are two options to choose from, lakeside or village side, where you can enjoy the experience of camping and trekking. The main reason is to encourage local tourism and support the villagers, along with which the tourist gets a closer look at the lives of the village people and engages in activities like cultivating, fishing, pottery to name a few. This is more like a weekend getaway for people in the city.

Kaljakellunta stands for Beer floating and as the name suggests, the festival is all about a floating vehicle loaded with beer. In the event, the participants float on the Kerava River or on the Vantaa River from Vantaa to a downstream riverside beach in Helsinki. There are small rubber crafts equipped with nothing more than a paddle and loads of beer.

Dia De Los Muertos Festival, Mexico

 

Also known as Day of the Dead, it is a festive and colorful holiday celebrating the lives of those who have passed on. It embraces the idea of maintaining ties with the deceased ones, so Mexicans visit cemeteries, decorate the graves and spend there time there. Costume contests is another interesting feature of this festival along with altar contests which takes place in schools, and some children dress up in costumes and go trick-or-treating.

Krampus is Austria’s horrid Christmas tradition. During Christmas, when others are rejoicing the coming of Santa Claus, Austria take to the streets to celebrate Santa’s terrifying evil companion, Krampus. People gather to watch over 100 Krampus impersonators moving round the streets dressed as evils with horns. While Santa believes in giving gifts to children from his bag, Krampus beats naughty children, and puts them in a woven wicker basket on his back.

We have all seen this festival in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, as Katrina Kaif, Abhay Deol, Hrithik Roshan and Farhan Akhtar endulges in the tomato fight. It is the world’s biggest food fight, where people from all corners of the world join in for this fun activity.

Jambay Lhakhang Festival, Bhutan

The sacred naked dance festival is an annual religious Bhutanese festival. During the festival, the monks and nonprofessionals including clowns wear colorful masks and costumes, while dancing to folk songs. It is consider as a very auspicious opportunity and a spiritual exercise to be able to witness the dances as these dances remind the people of their spiritual and moral duties.

On the day before Easter, people of Corfu throw ceramic pots out of their window, smashing them on the pavements below, saying it marked a new beginning. This festivity is unique to the island of Corfu.
