GoT S8 E3: Fans complain that the episode was too dark, the cinematographer disagrees

Date:

The latest episode of ‘Game of Thrones’ which aired on Monday in India, was a much-anticipated battle between the Night King and the people at Winterfell. Once the episode was out, fans from all over the globe started pointing out that the episode was too dark, in terms of the lighting and nothing was visible. The episode also called ‘Battle of Winterfell’ and ‘The Long Night’ aired on HBO and fans started putting memes on social media about that they couldn’t see a thing.

While the extreme darkness seemed like most fans’ main concern, the cinematographer behind the episode does not think there was an issue with the visuals.

During an interaction with Wired magazine, Fabian Wagner, the cinematographer of the episode said, “A lot of the problem is that a lot of people don’t know how to tune their TVs properly.”

He also stated that the episode is not meant for small screens like phones and iPads. He added, “A lot of people also, unfortunately, watch it on small iPads, which in no way can do justice to a show like that anyway. Game of Thrones is a cinematic show and therefore you have to watch it like you’re at a cinema: in a darkened room.”

He also said that the issue also could be that people were watching it in a brightly lit room and since the sequence is about a great war in the night. The episode was 84 minutes long and it was the decision of the makers to have the episode dark to make it impactful.

The cinematographer also said in a series like ‘Game of Thrones’, which is so emotionally engaging.

The teaser of Episode 4 was released following the airing of Episode 3. After the war against the Night King, the short video teased another impending battle between Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow’s forces and Cersei Lannister’s army.
