EC order blocking PM Modi biopic applies to ‘NaMo TV’ too: EC sources

Date:

The Election Commission order on Wednesday banning the release of the biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi also applies to NaMo TV, which also cannot be aired during the poll period, Election Commission sources said.

In its order, the poll watchdog banned the release of ‘PM Narendra Modi’, saying any such film that subserves purpose of any political entity or individual should not be displayed in the electronic media.

The film was supposed to be released on April 11 and was coinciding with the beginning of the first phase of 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

“That any poster or publicity material concerning any such certified content, which either depicts a candidate (including prospective) for the furtherance (or purported to further) of electoral prospect, directly or indirectly, shall not be put to display in electronic media in the area where MCC (Model Code of Conduct) is in operation,” the EC’s order had said.

The recently launched NaMo TV, the 24-hour channel promoting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party, was mysteriously showed up on satellite TV networks late last month, drawing protests from the opposition.

It is officially tagged as a marketing channel but also called a news service by some providers. NaMo TV is being beamed to all subscribers of most DTH (Direct-To-Home) platforms since March 28, 2019.
