Noida: Con-artist scams 14 lakh e-commerce customers, arrested from office

A 23-year-old MBA student, Nandan Rao Patel was arrested for duping 14 lakh e-commerce customers in a huge scam where he was facilitated by his employees. He was nabbed from his office in Noida Sector 142 on Saturday.

According to a police report, the accused allegedly sold the information of his customers to sham call centres who then used it to cheat people. The police have recovered the evidence from his laptop. They recovered a laptop and mobile phones which had the data of 14 lakh customers of various online shopping companies.

The bank also reported a data theft along with many complaints by customers. The bank informed the police that its customers were being cheated by the call centres by a lucky draw contest, or GST or income tax registration scheme.

The additional SP said that the accused had told them that he bought data from two employees from an E-commerce site at Rs 2 to 3 per customer and sold it to fake call centres at the rate of Rs 5 to 6 per customer.

An FIR has been registered against Patel under Indian Penal Code sections 420 (cheating), 406 (punishment for Criminal breach of trust), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document).
