Deepika Padukone is all set to portray the role of an acid attack survivor in her next film Chhapaak. The film is based on the life of Laxmi Agarwal, who was attacked at the age of 15 and has been campaigning against acid attacks ever since.
Padukone recently took to social media to reveal her first look as an acid attack survivor, the name of her character, and the film’s release date.
Based on acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal’s life, Chhapaak will see Deepika portray the role of an acid attack survivor, Malti. The film’s shooting began on March 25 in Delhi.

Directed by Meghna Gulzar, the film will see Mirzapur’s Vikrant Massey starring opposite the ‘Padmavat’ actress. The film will also be Deepika’s debut in the field of production. Chhapaak will be Padukone and Gulzar’s first movie together. Vikrant will reportedly play a North Indian boy who started a campaign against acid violence.
The actors had also shared a picture from the reading session of the film recently.
Laxmi Agarwal, whose life the movie is based on, was attacked in 2005, when she was 15-years-old, by 32-years-old Guddu, whose advances she had rejected. She has since then been campaigning against acid attacks and speaks for the rights of acid attack victims. She later started a petition that led the Supreme Court to order the central and state governments to regulate the sale of acid. She also won an award for the US State Department’s International Women of Courage in 2014.
