On a disputed island in the East Sea, the only person left is an 81-year-old South Korean widow. Kim Sin-Yeol is the only who lives on this disputed Dokdo Islands which has been in contention by Japan and South Korea for over 300 years. She is the only permanent resident inhabiting the Dokdo Islands while the support staff and policemen, tourists keep on visiting and going back.
She has been living on the island since 1991 when she moved to the island with her husband who died last October. Kim plans to stay on as she feels at peace and the island vibe eases her mind. The island that Kim is currently inhabiting has been the center of a longstanding dispute by two parties namely Japan and South Korea.
Japan calls it Takeshima Islands and has accused South Korea of illegally occupying it while according to the Koreans, it has been theirs since the sixth century. In the 1950s, Koreans stationed their guards to implement control over the island. The island is visited by over 160,000 tourists and the control is with the Koreans as of now. Koreans have been protective about their culture and space and plan to keep it that way.
There is only one house on the island that belongs to Kim and her daughter and son-in-law are planning to move in soon.
