‘It’s done,’ says RaGa as Rajasthan waives off farmer loans after MP and Chhattisgarh

New Delhi: After Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, the newly elected Congress government in Rajasthan announced a loan waiver for farmers fulfilling the key election promise that is seen to be a big factor in its victory over the ruling BJP in the three heartland states.

Ashok Gehlot-led government had sought 10 days to announce the waiver in Rajasthan but did it within two days.

Meanwhile, in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Chief Ministers Kamal Nath and Bhupesh Baghel signed off on the waiver within few hours after taking oath on Monday.

Loans up to Rs 2 lakh will be waived at the cost of Rs. 18,000 crore to the state.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi took it to Twitter to hail the move: “It’s done! Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh have waived farm loans. We asked for 10 days. We did it in 2,” Gandhi Tweeted.

Earlier on Wednesday Gandhi tweeted a dig at two BJP-led state governments that were seen as trying to catch up with the Congress. While Assam said it would waive farm loans, Gujarat did write off rural electricity bills to the tune of Rs. 650 crore.

On Tuesday Congress President Rahul Gandhi said that he would not allow Prime Minister Narendra Modi to “sleep or rest” till he waived farm loans, in reply to it Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “it is a new low in public discourse.”
