FBI, RCMP and Indian cops bust major con call centre racket in Delhi NCR

A call centre has been busted in Loni in NCR that was duping people by telling them that their money would double in a short period of time. The police has arrested Pravesh Kashana, the mastermind behind the gang along with six other people on Tuesday.

The head of the gang, Kashana would employ young boys and girls in the call centre and the contact details given to them were of affluent account owners. Their job description was to call on the numbers allotted to them and mislead the people by telling them that their money could be doubled by investing in a specific insurance or bond withing a short period of time.

The first complaint was filed by an 88-year-old man’s daughter after he invested Rs. 80 lakh and was assured high returns by the call centre, which turned out to be false. After the complaint, the police went on a search drive to look more closely into the scam and bust it.

Many items were retrieved including two laptops, twelve mobile phones, seven walky-talkies, SIM cards, and registers that were used by the gang. The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Romil Baaniya conducted the raid.

They also recovered nine individual accounts into which the money was transferred that were opened using fake documents and details. Although, seven people were arrested, the search is still on for the remaining contributors of the scam.

While this scam got busted, there might be many such ones that are still hiding and fleecing the masses of their hard-earned money. Here are a few tips to keep yourselves safe of such scams.

  • Avoid answering any support calls unless you know the numbers.
  • Do not provide any personal details to any call centre executive over the phone.
  • Cross-check with other sources about the credibility of the companies.
  • Do a background check of the company approaching you, unless you are aware about it.
  • If you receive any such calls and by mistake happen to answer them, carefully verify the caller’s identity before revealing personal information.
  • Avoid opening any promotional text messages. Refrain from opening any links or attachments that could be used by the fraudsters to pull out the details.
  • Downloading Truecallers in your mobile phones could be a good way to keep a tap on the calls that you receive.
