Haryana known for Kurukshetra, dangal, Dhodha, home of Gods, is home to celebrities every field. While it has among the worst gender ratios in the country, the state’s women have dazzled the entire country. Let’s take a look at these wonder women.

  • Sakshi Malik 

Sakshi Malik won hearts when she won the bronze medal for wrestling at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Malik belongs from the Rohtak district of Haryana and has also won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games. Her win at the Olympics has helped inspire many girls from Haryana.

  • Parineeti Chopra

Parineeti an Indian actress and singer, born in Ambala, Haryana has appeared in hits like ‘Ishaqzaade’, ‘Hassi Toh Phassi’ and many more.

External Affair Minister, Sushma Swaraj was born in Ambala Cantonment, Haryana, and pursued her graduation from the state.

She was a member of the Haryana Legislative Assembly from 1977 to 1982, and then again from 1987 to 1990. She was also one of the top contenders to become Chief Minister of the state before ML Khattar was nominated.

  • The Phogat Sisters

The Phogat sisters, from Bhiwani, Haryana have been trained in wrestling, and three of them – Geeta, Babita and Vinesh – have won gold medals at the Commonwealth Games.

Bollywood movie – ‘Dangal’ by Aamir Khan which released in 2016, is based on the lives of the sisters with Mahavir (their father), Geeta and Babita being the central characters.

  • Kalpana Chawla 

Born in Karnal, Kalpana Chawla was the first woman of Indian origin to go to space.

She completed her graduation from India and moved abroad to study aerospace engineering in Texas. She began working for NASA in 1988 and embarked on her first mission to space in 1997, making her only the second Indian to do so after Rakesh Sharma.

Kalpana Chawla

In 2003, Kalpana was one of the seven crew members who lost their lives in the Columbia Space Shuttle tragedy. She has been honoured with the Congressional Space Medal of Honour.

Shuttle queen, Saina Nehwal, a Hissar girl has been making wonders in her badminton career.  She won the bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics.
