Turning a vegan like Virat Kohli? Consider these factors before the plunge

From the time, cricketer Virat Kohli has turned vegan, it is the most sought-after search on social media.
More and more people want to understand what this concept actually means. Is it just about giving up milk and paneer or there’s more to it and most importantly, what goes into turning a vegan.

Who is a vegan?
A person who stays away from all products derived from animals. Hence, their diet includes organic vegetables, soy products, whole grain cereals and related items.

Does it help the body medically?
Research shows that vegans tend to eat lesser calories so they weigh less and have a lower body mass index as compared to people with normal dietary habits. It helps to keep blood pressure and cholesterol in check too. Some cases of diabetes reversal have also come up.
Apart from the fact that a plant-based diet helps keep the body calm and at peace.

Can it be followed by all?
Veganism is fast catching up as a lifestyle choice. However, it isn’t an easy one. Many things need to be thought through and kept in mind before taking this decision.
– Person’s body type and body requirement
– Deficiencies one could be suffering from.
– Long term sustainability.

Most nutritionist advice that people should try it for a short duration and only then decide to take it up permanently.

Types of food allowed

A few examples of what a vegan diet looks like –
Vegetables like leafy greens/lettuce, cabbage, carrots, pumpkin, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, tomatoes and asparagus, can be consumed.

Fruits can be any. From apples, peaches, pears to red grapes, cherries and plums. The number of helpings for both vegetables and fruits need to be higher than in normal conditions.

Whole grains like brown rice, oatmeal and high fibre cereals are good. The protein intake comes in through nuts/seeds, beans, legumes.

However, veganism does not allow meat, milk, cheese to yoghurt, butter. Processed foods like white flour, rice, potatoes, pizzas and pastas are also not allowed.

Sweetened carbonated drinks are also a big no.

Unfortunately, Vitamin B12 isn’t available in these plans and hence most vegans need to take it as a supplement.
Veganism is good if thought through and followed properly. It isn’t easy and procurement of diet material can sometimes be difficult.
Hence, a decision that isn’t based on just a temporary fad, should be encouraged.
